The new iPad has fab features such as a new Retina Display, better iSight camera, 4G LTE, improved processor among others. But should you trade-in your Apple iPad 2 for the 3rd generation iPad?
New Retina Display
The new iPad has an improved Retina display that gives it four times more pixels than iPad 2. The text and images look pin sharp and it is hard to discern individual pixels at a normal viewing distance. The 2nd generation iPad has a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, whereas the new iPad has a screen resolution of 2048 x 1536.
The improvement in the display quality on the new iPad can be compared to the jump from the Apple iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4.
iSight Cameras
The 2nd generation iPad has a VGA quality front camera and a 720p video recording quality back camera. The cameras can't be used to produce satisfying still and video shots and are at best ideal for FaceTime video calls and probably Skype.
The New iPad has a more reliable camera that offers five-megapixel still and 1080p video. The optics on the back are noticeably bigger enabling the iSight camera to produce sharper overall images. The camera has a hybrid infrared filter that keeps out harmful infrared rays.
Connectivity
The 3rd generation iPad supports 4G LTE, 3G, and Wi-Fi, whereas the iPad 2 supports 3G and Wi-Fi cellular networks globally. Both tablets are equally fast over Wi-Fi and 3G giving you downlink speeds of up to 42 Mbps with DC-HSDPA and up to 21.1 Mbps with HSPA+.3.
The new iPad is designed with cellular antennas that access a larger frequency spectrum and enables you to share the high-speed data connection with up to five devices by acting as a personal hotspot. Both tablet computers support AirPlay mirroring and Bluetooth.
A5X Processor
The 3rd generation iPad has a quad-core GPU that is responsible for powering the new Retina display. However, both tablet computers have a dual-core CPU and perform equally well when using apps, surfing the Internet and streaming and downloading content.
Battery Life
Both tablet computers give you roughly 10 hours of battery life on a single battery charge with wireless enabled.
Operating System And Software
With either the new iPad or iPad 2, you can use the latest iOS5.1 and software. iCloud streaming for movies and iPhoto are now available on iPad and iLife and iWorks apps have been upgraded to take advantage of the new Retina display.
